From the Introduction by the author – Deborah Adams
The Horse, The Dragon and The 10,000 Things was written as an introduction to the magical mysteries of Chinese culture and an easy and entertaining way to teach children how to cope with their own stress, and feel empowered in their surroundings. It includes references from the Chinese Zodiac, the Five Elements of Feng Shui and the Medicine Wheel, and shares the concept of Qi (‘chee’) or what Western culture best describes as “energy” or “lifeforce.” It is an introduction into the complex study of Tai Chi & Qigong (‘chee gung’) and the healing benefits for what the ancient Chinese considered the five main organs of the body: lungs, heart, liver, spleen and kidneys. Five is an influential number in many Chinese practices and beliefs, and references of “Five” can be found throughout Chinese history, as can the number 10,000 which is easiest summarized as “everything else in the world.” Revered Chinese Philosopher Lao Tzu, referred to the 10,000 Things often in the Tao Te Cheng and it appears in Chinese poetry, art and writings. This book introduces some of these traditional Chinese concepts and opens a doorway into the world of mythical Chinese beliefs, but its true intention is to teach children how to relieve stress through gentle movements, focused breathing and guided imagery
with meditation.
Stress levels are higher than ever in our world today, and it is tragically affecting our children. The days when children would lie on the grass and watch the clouds gently pass above have been replaced with viewing electronic screens. Many of these screen experiences are filled with aggressive video games or rocket fast impressions that don’t allow children the creativity and freedom to experience the world around them, run and jump and yell and simply play. Children are prescribed medications for things we have labeled ADD and ADHD rather than someone taking the time to teach them ways to refocus their internal energy. Sensory/SPD not only affects children, but their caregivers as well with feelings of helplessness and extreme emotional stress. As a whole, we spend 3 trillion dollars on health care when 80% of that is spent on preventable illnesses. Qigong is simple to learn and even easier to do. Why not use this ancient healing method to empower ourselves to make our own medicine from within so we can be proactive with our personal health and wellness?
I have had the privilege to work with many groups of people throughout my 35 years in the health and wellness profession, but none have been as enriching as seeing children discover Qi. I do not teach traditional Tai Chi from a martial arts application, but rather what I call “Therapeutic Tai Chi.” My style focuses on simple movements with easy mind meditations and reminders to take a deep breath now and then. This simplicity empowers children into a state of deep relaxation and a chance to experience themselves in the present moment. This releases them from an over-stressed-unfocused-frazzled state into a much calmer, peaceful place referred to as the “Relaxation Response.” When the body, mind, and spirit can come together in the present moment and work together in unison … that’s when true internal healing of the whole being can take place.
This book is a guide and a tool for teachers or parents to help children of all ages gain confidence, clarity and creativity. It is intended to be read with actions included, but the story can also be read simply as a story for enjoyment and enlightenment. It can also be used as a guide for anyone teaching Therapeutic Tai Chi while sharing an entertaining mythical story filled with feel-good positive intentions, healing words, relaxing pictures and feelings of JOY!
